Commander Pays Tribute to Thoppigala War Heroes

2007-07-13 07:29:19

“It is not big armies that win battles, it is good ones”- Marshal Maurice de Saxe

IN THE WAKE OF  historic military achievements in  Thoppigala, the last stronghold of Tiger (LTTE) terrorists in the east of  Sri Lanka after an absence of nearly fourteen years, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka Friday (13) morning flew to Thoppigala to express their gratitude to  valiant troops and all other service personnel.

Visiting Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Donald Perera, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka and  a team of  Army officers were received by Brigadier C. Gallage who was the Commander, Commando Brigade that captured the center of Thoppigala. They first reached Illuppadichenai where the visiting military chiefs met senior officers serving the area and praised them for their valour and dedication.

They spoke to senior officers gathered there and further instructed them to get on with follow-up clearing operations and assist and coordinate with authorities in launching subsequent development plans upon clearing of minefields and booby traps.

Their second stop was the rocky plateau, Ruchiramale, where LTTE terrorists have had their Nagesh base earlier. Commander of the Army spoke to his soldiers and congratulated them on their dedication and commitment for the sake of the Motherland and exchanged a couple of views with them. Commander ensured that those soldiers serving in two different locations in the area received his appreciation as a symbolic gesture.

Both Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army lauded their contribution to salvage the country from vicious grips of terrorism during these meetings before they saw for themselves a few buildings that had been used by the LTTE for their criminal acts before the troops overran them. The military chiefs at the end of the tour flew back to Colombo.

A TIGER CEMETERY FOUND AT THOPPIGALA

13 Jul 2007 - 20:09

During the search operation conducted by the Security Forces after they captured Thoppigala a burial ground of tiger terrorists has been found on July 11. In the burial ground which covered a vast area, tombs of hundreds of dead LTTE cadres can be seen. On the tombs were written the names of terrorists and the year in which they died in Tamil language. Also a monument in memory of the dead cadres has also been built.

Tiger terrorists in their military propaganda had spread the falsehood that the number of cadres who had died was insigruficant. But the cemetery which the LTTE had built with hundreds of tombs proved beyond doubt that their propaganda was utterly false. The tombs belonged not only to LTTE cadres killed recently but also those killed several years ago.

The day before yesterday (11), the security forces successfully completed their humanitarian mission of liberating the Eastern province by capturing the LTTE's last stronghold Thoppigala. They are consolidating their positions while being engaged in clearing and search operations in the area. The security forces started their liberation mission on April 25-2007. They were able to liberate Aiththamalai, Tampitiya, Narakamulla, Pankudaweli, Periyamadu, Laviniaru areas and LTTE camps in Ibbanwila, Weppanweli, Akkaraithiwu, Mawadiodi. In their operation security forces were able to recover large stocks of weapons, explosives, vehicles abandoned in the jungle and food stores. They moved forward cautiously removing landmines, until they achieved their objective. The hoisting of the National Flag on the peak of Thoppigala symbolizing the victory, was the culmination of the humanitarian mission.
